SUMMARY:CLT-Energy Complex(ity): A Look at 2023 and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:This event is co-sponsored by CFA NC\, CAIA \n\n\n\nTurmoil or transition? Or a little of both? \n\n\n\nEnergy markets have been on a wild ride throughout the 2020s. Is it an inflection point between traditional and alternative energy? Or just the latest (premature) prediction of peak oil and the fossil fuel phaseout? \n\n\n\nJoin CAIA and CFA Society NC for an evening of energy enlightenment.  \n\n\n\nOur panel examines the state of global energy markets today\, and to what extent we are laying the groundwork for a transition. Topics include: \n\n\n\n\nSupply and demand in a post-pandemic\, rising-interest-rate environment. \n\n\n\nCapital investment: How do we best allocate this finite resource among various energy sources? \n\n\n\nCan the free market get it right\, or do we need policy makers to step in? \n\n\n\nWhere do we see ourselves in 20 years and how do we get there?\n\n\n\nHow do we in the Alts world position our portfolios to benefit from (or avoid getting annihilated by) the transition?\n\n\n\nAre we prepared for the consequences (good and bad) of ESG investing standards?\n\n\n\n\nEnergy impacts virtually every element of our lives\, and thus every element of the portfolios we manage. To some degree\, energy uncertainty equals portfolio uncertainty. \n\n\n\nOn December 1\, our panel aims to cut through the uncertainty. Join us.

SUMMARY:A History of Securities Fraud Scandals
DESCRIPTION:UCLA School of Law Professor James Park will discuss his new book on the history of securities fraud regulation\, The Valuation Treadmill: How Securities Fraud Threatens the Integrity of Public Companies. Published 20 years after the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley\, the book examines case studies of major securities frauds from the 1970s to the present involving companies such as Penn Central\, Apple\, Xerox\, Enron\, Citigroup\, and General Electric. It shows how securities fraud became a regulatory concern as investors began placing more emphasis on projections of financial performance in valuing companies. \n\n\n\nJames Park is a Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law. He is an expert on corporate law and securities regulation. After graduating from Yale Law School\, Professor Park clerked for federal judges and practiced law in New York City at a law firm and then as an Assistant Attorney General in the Investor Protection Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
