From Bitcoin to non-fungible tokens\, these assets tend to be volatile; while they have recently grown in value\, they tend to be reported at cost. Register for this in-depth discussion to learn more about the regulatory standards that apply to cryptoasset reporting\, as well as the rationale behind these standards. \n\n\n\n$10 CFA NC Members

SUMMARY:Chinese Wealth Management Products\, Safe as Cash
DESCRIPTION:Do the benefits of investing in Wealth Management Products (WMPs) outweigh the benefits of simply holding cash? Hear from an expert panel in the CFA community to discuss the current disclosure of WMPs within China and learn more about the complex risks in the seemingly simple area of cash and cash equivalents on the books of Chinese corporates. \n\n\n\nWhile WMPs may be able to offer yields far above the rates offered by banks\, the range of potential returns varies widely. Some products may even be presented as guaranteed returns. The dispersion of rates on offer should challenge investors to weigh how riskless these purportedly safe assets are. \n\n\n\nRecent troubles at the large financial institution Huarong Asset Management should give investors pause\, as the perennial safety of its bonds quickly shattered in April; its once-riskless paper is reached distressed levels of 55 cents on the yuan. Companies with WMPS that own similarly “safe” bonds must now reexamine the risk profile of their normally innocuous cash hoard. Register now to join CFA Society New York’s Financial Reporting and Analysis interest group for this can’t-miss discussion.

SUMMARY:Carbon Quotient: Building Accountability for Net Zero Across the Investment Value Chain
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to explore the development and the features of Carbon Quotient™ methodology with experts from accounting\, institutional investors\, and financial regulators. As a growing number of governments\, global companies\, and institutional investors rapidly commit to carbon neutrality or “net zero” by mid-century\, Carbon Quotient™ (CQ)\, a new transition risk tool set\, is well-positioned to meet the need for a comprehensive navigational tool to guide the journey towards net zero.  \n\n\n\nCQ can be used to chart our course\, show our past methodology and current positioning\, and reroute us when we are off track by accurately measuring and reporting our current and predicted climate transition risks and opportunities. CQ works by measuring the transition risk inherent in physical assets that are the source of carbon emissions. By tracking and forecasting progress toward net zero ambitions\, CQ is designed to build meaningful accountability of financial institutions and corporate managers for doing their part to deliver emissions reductions in the real economy.

SUMMARY:Advanced SQL for Business and Finance
DESCRIPTION:According to an MIT Technology Review article written by Antonio Regalado\, the amount of digital data being created globally is doubling every two years. Yet only about 0.5% of that data is ever analyzed. \n\n\n\nSpecifically\, having a keen understanding of SQL is important as a great deal of corporate data is stored in tabular format. Being able to efficiently work with very large tables to access key information can help professionals add unprecedented value to their organizations as they can better answer various strategic questions after accessing such data. Such information can help organizations develop and sustain competitive advantages. As a result\, employers often rank SQL skills as one of the most important skills for today’s professionals. \n\n\n\nIn this hands-on class\, participants will build on the SQL foundation established in Introduction to SQL and learn more advanced queries and commands as well as how to better structure queries so that they are more efficient and easier to debug. \n\n\n\nAttendees can use either a Mac or Windows computer for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Business Analytics & Visualization with Power Bi
DESCRIPTION:As enterprises continue to gather and collect oceans of structured and unstructured data given extremely cheap data storage options\, there is a critical responsibility of business decision-makers to draw intelligent insights from these vast data stores to create and sustain competitive edges. By working with business intelligence tools\, professionals are able to seamlessly slice and analyze data without having to invest enormous amounts of time learning programming languages such as Python and R to do such work. \n\n\n\nIn this one-day workshop participants will learn how to execute key business intelligence and visualization tasks via Microsoft’s Power BI software. Power BI is a software solution that Gartner’s Magic Quadrant has highlighted as a leader in analytics and business intelligence platforms for the last twelve years. \n\n\n\nStudents will gain experience importing business data into Microsoft Power BI\, exploring interactive data visualizations\, creating valuable dashboards and reports\, and using meaningful insights from Power BI to enhance decision-making. This course includes a hands-on project at the end to tie all course concepts together. \n\n\n\nAttendees must use a PC in this class. Power BI does not support Macs! Mac users can either install Parallels and run Power BI or set up a virtual machine in the cloud and install Power BI through the virtual machine.

SUMMARY:Noise: Applications to Financial Analysis and Discussion of the Recent Book by Daniel Kahneman\, Olivier Sibony\, and Cass Sunstein
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Kahneman is a winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics. His 2011 book Thinking\, Fast and Slow is a seminal work in behavioral economics. Olivier Sibony is Professor of Strategy at HEC Paris and the author of You’re About to Make a Terrible Mistake! He worked for 25 years at McKinsey and Company including roles as Senior Partner and a Global Strategy Practice Leader. Cass R. Sunstein\, co-author with Richard Thaler of Nudge\, is currently the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard. He is the founder and director of the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy at Harvard Law School. \n\n\n\nIn their recent book Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgement\, Kahneman\, Sibony\, and Sunstein demonstrate that noise has a substantially larger impact than generally recognized. The authors examine the implications of noise on judgement\, the challenges of predictions and the psychology of judgment. Noise\, relative to bias\, is a separate and distinct source of error in decisions. Many judgements are made regarding values or events which may be unknowable. But noise regarding these judgements is both identifiable and measurable. \n\n\n\nFor those already familiar with the conclusions of Burton Malkiel in A Random Walk Down Wall Street and the promise of Superforecasting by Philip Tetlock\, our discussion of Noise may change the way you view investment forecasts. No knowledge of the book is required to attend. It is recommended that participants randomly select 5 of the 28 chapters to read and discuss before the event.
